The Big Bowl was unveiled in November 1975, 10 months after the Club was officially opened. It was the brainwave of Reg Ellery and Stan Kanaar and constructed by Stan in his workshop under his house.
The huge bowl, said to be the largest in the world, measures 1.907 mm(6'2") in diameter and weighs 2 tonnes. The outer surface is made of 100mm (4") thick cement ( about 32 bags) plastered on to a framework of 75mm (3") water pipe and 13mm (1/2") reinforced steel. The whole of the steel framework is wrapped in two layers of 13mm (1/2") wire mesh.

The inaugural meeting of the Lake Cathie Men's Bowling Club took place on 10th December 1970 and of the Lake Cathie Women's Bowling Club on 22nd January 1971. The first Lake Cathie Bowling & Recreation Club clubhouse was completed in April 1973 and the first bowling green in December 1973. Both were officially opened on 10th February 1974.
